Start by removing the internal net holding the beads. Then, hand washing is strongly recommended. Fill a basin or your bathtub with lukewarm water and a bit of mild detergent. Submerge the cover and gently scrub the soiled areas. Rinse thoroughly with clean water until all the soap is gone. Never put the cover in the dryer. It will destroy the inner lining. Let the cover air dry instead.

That's normal. Even though the beads sit inside an internal net, as a safety measure we remove the tabs or paper clip that open the covers, so young children can't reach the polystyrene beads or swallow them.
